The Michigan Alliance to Strengthen Social Security and Medicare (MASSSM) is a non-partisan coalition of individuals and 58 groups and organizations including faith-based, seniors, youth, women, labor, business, handicapped, civil rights and civil liberties representing thousands of members. We unite to oppose any privatization of public social programs, and to strengthen them against all who would limit or destroy them. MASSSM supports health care for everyone, and will dedicate all its efforts and unrelenting energy to reach these goals.
We are an organization that champions the improvement of Social Security benefits and the extension of health care benefits to all.
No one organization or individual can accomplish major goals.
But there is strength in numbers.
Our objectives are to strengthen Social Security, Medicare and an Rx drug program. We will carry out a counter-campaign to fight against the relentless attack on these benefits. The 2007 Federal budget earmarked $712 billion for privatizing Social Security. We intend to carry out a counter-campaign to fight against the attack on our well-earned benefits.
A unified Michigan Alliance will accomplish these important goals by working together as an Alliance to protect Social Security, Medicare and the Rx drug program.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue its Pledge program, “Telling Michigan Where I Stand,” to be signed by political candidates as well as incumbents, state and federal, regardless of political party. The Pledge affirms opposition to privatizing Social Security, opposes all efforts to reduce Medicare benefits, and supports improvements to the Medicare Prescription Drug Program to bring comprehensive coverage to all retirees at an affordable cost.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue its program to obtain comments of individuals expressing their views opposing privatization of Social Security and supporting a health care system and Rx drug program for everyone.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue to hold public forums featuring prominent speakers, experts in their fields, to educate citizens, the media, as well as our elected representatives.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue to provide speakers for meetings, TV, radio and forums to interested groups where facts may be presented.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue through its media office to provide a flow of fact sheets, press releases, news clips, and reaction quotes. It will provide constant coverage through this web site.
· The Michigan Alliance will continue to undertake hearings, demonstrations, and various group activities as appropriate.
· The Michigan Alliance will undertake targeted print and radio ads in selected areas to alert the public to any threats to Social Security and to provide communications with our supporters.
